What to check before you buy a website?
First of all, you need to know the different ways in which a website can be developed. The list is, of course, huge. We would say there are three categories of School Website Design that you can find on the Internet:
- Based on someone’s platform (eg, Shopify stores, Wix, WP Web Design).
- Based on an established standard (for example, WordPress, Joomla, Prestashop sites).
- Entirely built from scratch.
SITE BASED ON AN EXTERNAL PLATFORM
In the first case, there is really nothing for you to do. Your technical risk here is quite low because the whole system is managed by the provider, you have nothing to do except the management of your content. The only advice we would give you here is to be careful not to be too comfortable playing in someone else’s yard.
SITE BASED ON A CONTENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (CMS)
The second case presents a low to medium technical risk. What happens here is that there is a possibility that the original tool was personalized in a weird way that might make it difficult to improve (it’s not very common but it certainly can happen).
SITE DEVELOPED FROM SCRATCH
Now, the third scenario is that of a School Website Design developed completely from scratch. When you find yourself in a position to buy a site like this, you should definitely pay attention to a few traits.
WHAT IS THE BASIC TECHNOLOGY BEHIND THE PLATFORM?
This is probably the most important technical control you can perform. The same software can be built using a large number of different programming languages. You’ve probably heard of PHP, Java, C # or Python, but it’s just the tip of a very big iceberg. The possibilities are almost limitless.
DOES IT USE ANY FRAMEWORK?
A framework is a very useful tool for developers of any language. This is a toolbox that sits above the language and provides ready-made basic functionality. The first thing you want to check is whether the code is written using a framework or not. Of course, after you know what language the system is built on.
